BUENOS AIRES: Martin Palermo, one of the most popular Argentinian players of the modern era, has said his last goodbyes to a full-house Bombonera home of Boca Juniors.

The 36-year-old centre-forward, nicknamed The Titan, scored one of the goals in a 3-2 win for a select team including old colleagues such as Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Hugo Ibarra, Zamorano, Alberto Acosta and Jorge Bermudez. He retired from competitive football six months ago and has been trying his hand at car racing.

History man: Veteran Martin Palermo on the way out

Manchester City runaway Carlos Tevez, currently ‘resting’ in Buenos Aires after walking out on the Premier League leaders last November, made a halt-time appearance to salute Palermo and the crowd.

Palermo began with Estudiantes de La Plata and had a brief spell in Spain with Villarreal, Betis and Alaves. However he will always be linked mainly with Boca Juniors for whom he played between 1997 and 2000 and then again between 2004 and 2011.

He totalled 295 goals in 608 club matches in all competitions and nine goals in 15 games for Argentina.

Curios of his career including missing three penalties in one game between Argentina and Colombia in 1999 and breaking a leg in falling while celebrating a goal playing for Villarreal.
