LONDON: Everything has gone wrong for Tottenham since Harry Redknapp became favourite to become England’s Euro 2012 manager after Fabio Capello quit in a row over the national team captaincy.

The defeat at Everton was the first time Spurs have lost three games in a row since Harry Redknapp succeeded Juande Ramos in October 2008. They are still third but neighbours Arsenal, remarkably, would edge within one point by beating Newcastle on Monday.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has already said that he thinks the speculation has upset Spurs’ form and focus. The FA has now even banned all the Premier League managers from discussing the England job.

But it was not talk which defeated Tottenham but a first Everton goal from January arrival Nikica Jelavic and immense bad luck.

Redknapp said: “It was the most one-sided second half I’ve ever seen. We battered them non-stop. Unbelievable. I couldn’t have asked any more from my players.”

Redknapp has denied having been offered a three-contract extension by chairman Daniel Levy but he is also thought to have been told that, if he stays, he can have up to £50m to spend on new players.

The FA has said it will not approach its target until near the end of the season so as not to serve as a distraction. But the distracting effect of the job vacany is already a problem.

If Redknapp does leave for England, one of the favourites to succeed him will David Moyes who celebrated 10 years as Everton’s manager at the weekend.

Only Ferguson and Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger have lasted longer.
