GEORGE TOWN: Jeffrey Webb, head of the Cayman Islands football association, has emerged as favourite to take over as president of the Caribbean, Central and North American confederation,  CONCACAF.

Reports from all three CONCACAF zones suggest that Webb has the support of a majority 25 of the 40 members.

Webb said: “I am humbled by the tremendous outpouring of support and encouragement received from so many of the countries. It is this unity of the CONCACAF that will champion our success, and if elected, it is my intention to build on that unity through collaboration, transparency, integrity, engagement and accountability.”

The latest public endorsements for Webb have come from Costa Rican federation president, Eduardo Li,and Jamaica’s Horace Burrell.

The election will be staged during the CONCACAF Congress in Budapest on May 23 on the eve of FIFA Congress in the Hungarian capital.

Webb is  chairman of the CONCACAF youth committee and deputy chairman of FIFA’s internal audit committee and a member of its transparency and compliance committee. He is also chairman of the Caribbean Football Union’s normalisation committee, established last year after cash-for-votes scandal which brought about the downfall of long-serving CONCACAF AND CFU president Jack Warner.

Alfredo Hawitt of Honduras has served as interim president since Warner’s resignation.
