LONDON: Tottenham will face London rivals Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-finals after beating Bolton 3-1 at White Hart Lane in their repeated quarter-final. The match was preceded by a minute’s applause for Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba, who suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch in the original tie.

Bolton goalkeeper Adam Bogdan was the man of the match, making two remarkable double saves before being beaten three times in the final 20 minutes of the game. First he defied Jake Livermore and Luka Modric then Emmanuel Adebayor and Gareth Bale.

Spurs continued to press after the break, Rafael Van der vaart hitting the crossbar with a delightful whipped free-kick, and Bogdan was soon back in the thick of the action, pulling off fine saves when Van der Vaart and then Adebayor were put through on goal.

But his brave resistance finally ended when he failed to claim a Van der Vaart corner and Ryan Nelsen (74) was on hand to head home at the back post.

Spurs added to their lead three minutes later after a swift counter-attack ended with Jermaine Defoe playing in Bale, who calmly steered his shot past Bogdan.

Bolton pulled one back in the final minute, substitute Kevin Davies arriving at the back post to convert Ivan Klasnic’s right-wing cross, but Spurs had the final say with the last kick of the game, substitute Louis Saha curling a delightful shot into the corner from just outside the penalty area.

Everton have also set up a semi-final derby – in their case against Liverpool – after a 2-0 win at Sunderland in their quarter-final replay. The visitors were dominant throughout and fully deserved their spot in the last four for the first time in 12 years.

Tim Cahill was a particular menace for the visitors at the Stadium of Light but it was team-mate Nikica Jelavic who grabbed the opener having already proved a threat in the air with a header that went close.

After 24 minutes of one-way traffic, the Croatian striker coolly slotted in Magaye Gueye’s cross from the left after good work from Marouane Fellaini. The Black Cats were lacklustre, although they did liven up before the break as James McClean set up in-form Dane Nicklas Bendtner whose shot was blocked by Leighton Baines.

But it all went wrong after the interval for the hosts and, in particular, David Vaughan who had just come off the bench. The defender first gave the ball away, and after Fellaini’s neat through-ball for Jelavic, Vaughan kicked the striker’s shot with his left foot and then watched in agony as his right poked the ball into the net for an embarrassing own goal.
