LONDON: Leo Messi, in effect, has already won the all-competitions goals tally for the season but the race for the ESM Golden Shoe as the European leagues’ top scorer remains wide open.

The duel between Barcelona’s Argentinian and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo could not be tighter with both men on 41 goals – a Spanish league record – after the weekend’s matches.

Further down the top 10 Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney moved up to joint fifth with the two goals which helped beat Aston Villa.
