All the options from the last two matches in the group stage
KYIV/WARSAW: Sweden, the Republic of Ireland, Russia, Poland, Denmark, Holland, Croatia and the Irish Republic have all now been knockedout of Euro 2012 leaving just Group D to be decided.
UEFA, instead of the fan-friendly primacy of goal difference, uses the opaque head-to-head system. Hence the options on the remaining day are as follows:
• England will be through with a draw. If they lose, they have to hope France lose by enough so that England at least end level with Les Bleus on goal difference and goals scored (as England have a superior coefficient, 33.563 to France’s 30.508).
• Ukraine will be through with a win and out with any other result.
• France will be through with a draw. If they lose, they would only be out if England lose but at the same time move level with them on either goal difference or goals scored.
• Sweden are out.

*UEFA has amended its provisions on final group rankings after a decision by the UEFA Executive Committee at its meeting in Istanbul on 20 March 2012. The change has been made to avoid doubt, and in order to ensure that the criteria related to the direct confrontation between the teams remaining equal in points after the group phase are reapplied,
Paragraph 08.07 of the UEFA European Football Championship 2010-12 regulations now reads as follows, with a new clause d) shown in bold.
“If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings:
a) Higher number of points obtained in the matches played between the teams in question;
b) Superior goal difference resulting from the matches played between the teams in question;
c) Higher number of goals scored in the matches played between the teams in question;
d) If, after having applied criteria a) to c), two teams still have an equal ranking, criteria a) to c) are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the two teams in question to determine the final rankings of the two teams. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria e) to i) apply in the order given;
e) superior goal difference in all group matches;
f) higher number of goals scored in all group matches;
**g) position in the UEFA national team coefficient ranking system (see annex I, paragraph 1.2.2);
h) fair play conduct of the teams (final tournament);
i) drawing of lots”
