BUENOS AIRES: One year after riots on the streets of Buenos Aires following relegation, Argentinian giants River Plate have won promotion back to the top division.

Fan fury erupted in June last year after the record domestic title-holders and former world and South American champions dropped down a level for the first time in their history.

But a 2-0 win over Almirante Brown, thanks to two goals from veteran Franco-Argentinian striker David Trezeguet, had a 50,000 crowd in their Estadio Monumental cheering rather than jeering.

Trezeguet, who returned to Argentina last January after playing all his senior career in Europe, opened the scoring in the 49^th minute and secired the points in the 89^th with his 13^th goal of term.

Now 34, Trezeguet began in the youth teams of Platense then moved to France with Monaco in 1995. He was a European champion with France in 2000.

Promoted with River Plate will be Quilmes after a last-game win over Puerto Madryn lifted them above Instituto of Cordoba – who must now play off against Rosario Central.
