LONDON: Chelsea seized dramatic revenge for their weekend defeat by Manchester United by recovering from 3-2 down to win 5-4 in extra time in the League Cup.

In other action holders Liverpool crashed out. Manager Brandan Rodgers saw his team lose 3-1 at home to Swansea whom he had left for Anfield during the summer.

At Stamford Bridge, both Chelsea and Manchester United fielded weakened sides, with Premier and Champions League pressures ahead, and the third and fourth Chelsea goals were both down to mistakes by young United defender Scott Wootton.

First he gave away a penalty which Eden Hazard conmerted at the end of normal time then inadvertently played in Daniel Sturridge with a weak back header for another.

Ramires made it 5-3 before a Ryan Giggs penalty pulled United back to within one in another topsy-turvy match following Arsenal’s remarkable 7-5 win at Reading on Tuesday night.

Sunday’s Barclays Premier League game between the two teams was overshadowed by the accusations of “inappropriate language” against referee Mark Clattenburg, but this time the football took centre stage.

United took the lead in the 22nd minute following a defensive mix-up by Chelsea, Giggs taking advantage by scoring with a well-placed shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

David Luiz brought Chelsea level nine minutes level with a penalty after Alexander Buttner had tripped Victor Moses. But Javier Hernandez, who got the winner on Sunday, continued his fine record against the Blues with another smart finish two minutes before the break.

Again the hosts came back, this time Gary Cahill powering home a Juan Mata corner in the 52nd minute.

But they simply could not keep things watertight at the back and were cut apart by a superb combination between Anderson and Nani seven minutes later, the Portuguese dinking a beautiful finish past Petr Cech.

Chelsea were denied a strong penalty claim when the ball appeared to strike Wootton’s arm, adding to their list grievances following the two red cards in the league game.

But they did get a penalty in the fourth minute of injury time as this time Wootton was punished for a push on Ramires and Hazard rolled his penalty low down the middle.

Worse was to come for Wootton seven minutes into extra time as his attempted header back was too short and Sturridge rounded Anders Lindegaard to score.

Ramires added another in the 116th minute, dancing around the Dane for number five. Giggs converted a penalty for United’s fourth goal.

Anfield upset

Liverpool’s defence of the League Cup ended as Brendan Rodgers’ selection gamble backfired, as former club Swansea progressed to the quarter-finals for the first time in their history with a 3-1 win at Anfield.

The Northern Irishman left the Welsh club in the summer to take over from Kenny Dalglish but it was the visitors who had the last laugh in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup at Anfield.

Chico Flores and Nathan Dyer put the Swans 2-0 up with 17 minutes to go and although substitute Luis Suarez quickly pulled one back De Guzman made it 3-1 in added time to loosen the eight-time winners’ grip on the trophy.

Two late strikes and a penalty save from Mark Bunn ensured Norwich’s passage through to the quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory against Tottenham at Carrow Road.

Gareth Bale, who had torn Norwich apart here last season, seemed to have put Spurs on course for victory when he drove home a 20-yard shot in the second-half, but two goals in the last six minutes gave the Canaries an unlikely victory.

First substitute Alex Tettey’s shot flew in off the out-stretched leg of Jan Vertonghen and then Simeon Jackson pounced on an error by Hugo Lloris to make it 2-1 with three minutes left.

The drama did not end there, however, as Kyle Walker was upended in the Norwich box by Marc Tierney a minute later.

Clint Dempsey stepped up to take the spot-kick, but Bunn, making just his second start of the season, saved the American’s shot to gives the Canaries’ season another valuable shot in the arm.
