ZURICH/BRASILIA: FIFA has announced a 14PC rise in total prize money for the 2013 Confederations Cup, with the winner set to pocket $4.1M

The runners-up in the June 30 final at the Maracana will earn $3.6m. The winners of the third-place play-off in Salvador will pick up $3m, while the team finishing fourth will go home with $2.5m. Teams eliminated during the group phase and finishing fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth will each receive $1.7m. At the 2009 edition of the Confederations Cup the total prize fund was $17.6m with champion Brazil collecting $3.75m.

Brazil will host the Confederations Cup in June and FIFA has twice agreed to push back the handover deadline for four of the six stadiums to be used for the tournament.

A new delivery deadline has been set for April 15 and world football’s governing body has stressed this will not be further extended. Along with Rio’s Maracana and Salvador, Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, Fortaleza and Recife have been selected as the host cities for the tournament, which will begin on June 15.

In other news . . . FIFA has announced that its Transfer Matching System (TMS) recorded 1,748 player moves during the January window – a 3% rise year-on-year. FIFA said clubs across 145 countries spent $417m on players. Sixty-one per cent of completed transfers in TMS were transfers where players signed with a new club while being out of contract. Some 11pc of all completed transfers in January 2013 represented clubs engaging a player from another club on a permanent basis. The remaining 28pc of transfers related to loans.
