LONDON: Steve Richards, another of Fleet Street’s old sport-writing stagers, has died near his home in Surrey, south of London, aged 84.

Richards, a former sportswriter with the Daily Herald and its successor, The Sun, was not only a lifelong fan of his home-town club Derby County, but conducted a campaign to have Steve Bloomer, his legendary grandfather, commemorated in a city centre memorial.

Richards, began with the local Raymond’s News Agency before moving to the Evening Telegraph. He then went on to Fleet Street before moving into sport communications with Pepsi for whom he worked with Pele.

He maintained his football journalism with match reporting for Sunday newspapers.
