LONDON: Chelsea and Real Madrid both cruised into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League as the second round reached its three-quarter stage.

Chelsea beat Galatasaray 2-0 at home and 3-1 on aggregate while Madrid saw off Schalke 3-1 for a 9-2 overall demolition.

At Stamford Bridge Galatasaray, despite the efforts of former Blues striker Didier Drogba, fell behind early on when Samuel Eto’o fired past Fernando Muslera. Gary Cahill made it 3-1 on aggregate when he thumped home after John Terry’s header was saved.

And Galatasaray’s night was summed up by Drogba’s stoppage-time miss so manager Roberto Mancini has yet to beat Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho in six European attempts. Galatasaray are yet to beat English opposition in Europe in eight attempts.

In Spain Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice for record nine-times European champions Real Madrid against Schalke, starting in the 21st minute when he converted Gareth Bale’s square ball from close range.

Schalke levelled when Tim Hoogland’s low shot took a deflection off Sergio Ramos to beat keeper Iker Casillas. But in the second half Ronaldo scored his 41st goal this season before Alvaro Morata tapped in the Spanish club’s third.

Ronaldo might have completed a hat-trick but saw a low drive strike a post.

The one downside for Madrid was a serious cruciate ligament injury suffered by new starlet Jese after a collision with Schalke defender Sead Kolasinac.
