SAO PAULO: Work has yet to resume in the Itaquero World Cup stadium after the latest death last week of a construction worker.

The new home of Corinthians which stages the Opening Match between Brazil and Croatia on June 12 is months behind time already.

Work was halted after the accident which saw the death of Fabio Hamilton da Cruz who fell 12m from one of the temporary stands which will be demolished after the finals.

This is not the first fatal accident in the stadium. Last November two workers died when a crane fell on a lorry.

** A federal judge has ruled that the Brazilian government is liable to meet the costs of building television masts to provide a signal to the world’s broadcasters.

The Public Works Ministry had objected that the World Cup contract insisted that the costs be met from private finance and not state funds.
