LONDON: Arsenal have filled the gap created by injury to France centre-forward Olivier Giroud by signing Manchester United’s England striker Danny Welbeck.

Already unsettled, Welbeck became definitively surplus to United’s requirements after they clinched the season-long loan signing of Colombia striker Radamel Falcao from Monaco.

Welbeck, 23, who is with Roy Hodgson’s national squad ahead of fixtures against Norway and Switzerland, rose through the ranks at Old Trafford, including loan spells at Preston and Sunderland.

Welbeck made his United debut in 2008 and went on to make 92 league appearances for his home-town club – scoring 20 goals. He lifted the Premier League once and also collected League Cup and FIFA World Club Cup winners’ medals under Sir Alex Ferguson.

But he lost his club way under David Moyes and will probably make his Arsenal debut is at home to champions Manchester City.

He has signed a long-term deal to become Arsene Wenger’s fifth summer signing after Alexis Sanchez, David Opsina, Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers.

Falcao had hoped for a return to Spanish football with Real Madrid after his year-long ‘exile’ in the south of France but a knee ligament injury cut his last season in half and forced hm to miss the World Cup.

Madrid’s own summer dealings left them with defensive rather than attacking priorities in the last few hours of transfer dealing though they have taken Javier Hernandez from United on loan.

Falcao joined Monaco from Atletico de Madrid for £50m last summer and scored 11 goals in 20 appearances before his injury. He has scored twice in three games this season after making his comeback during a pre-season tournament at Arsenal.

The 28-year-old had also been linked with Arsenal, United’s Premier League rivals Manchester City as well as Italian champions Juventus.

He was United’s sixth summer signing under Louis Van Gaal after defenders Luke Shaw, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo, midfielder Ander Herrera and forward Angel Di Maria.

The loan of Falcao is likely to cost United around £9m, taking their summer spending to a record £149m.

United’s previous record summer outlay had been 2007 when they parted with £62m. Their latest spree exceeded Manchester City’s reported £148m in 2009 and Chelsea’s £111m in 2003.

The total summer spend by Premier League clubs was a record £835m, up from last year’s £760m.
