NYON: Wembley is poised to be named by UEFA as venue for the semi-finals and final of the pan-European 2020 Euro Championships writes KEIR RADNEDGE.

The executive committee of European football’s governing body vote to decide which of the 19 bidding football associations will be among the 13 hosts for the widespread tournament.

Munich’s Allianz Arena is Wembley’s only rival for the “finals” package but the German federation is concentrating on securing the entire finals in 2024. DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach has suggested it my withdraw Munich “to secure a consensus.”

Scotland’s Hampden Park, Ireland’s Dublin Arena and Wales’ Millennium Stadium have also bid to be 2020 hosts. The assocations have submitted bids for the package that includes three group matches and one game in the knockout stages.

The matches will be split into 13 different packages – 12 ordinary packages including three group matches and one knockout game, and one package for the semi-finals and the final.

There will be a maximum of one venue per country, meaning one stadium for each of the available 13 packages. Both semi-finals and the final will be played in one stadium.

Every national association will be allowed to present up to two bids, one for the ordinary package and one for the semi-finals/final package. Associations can decide to present the same city for their two bids or two different cities.

Helmut Sandrock, the DFB’s general secretary, recently told German media that talks had been held with the FA so that England would support Germany for 2024. Germany would support England for a potential 2028 bid.

** UEFA has approved the staging of its competitive matches in Israel again. A bar had been raised in mid-July because of security concerns. Israel is bidding the Teddy Stadium in Jerusalem to host matches at Euro 2020.
