RIO DE JANEIRO: Brazil has become, surprisingly, the first South American country to outlaw third-party ownership of players, ahead of a global ban being introduced by world federation FIFA later this year.

According to new transfer rules published by the Brazilian Football Confederation on Wednesday, it will now be illegal in Brazil in future to buy into the transfer rights of a player with the aim of profiting from future transfers.

Brazil and Argentina have been the two countries considered most heavily affected by the system which is being barred by FIFA at the behest, mainly, of European federation UEFA and its members.

Many international agents operating in South American have made a lucrative living from buying into the ownership rights of young players.

The CBF’s new regulations will permit contracts signed between January 1 and April 30 to remain valid for up to one year; however clubs will have to provide details of existing contracts such as the names of third party investors and expiration dates.

FIFA’s ban on future third-party ownership deals will come into effect on May 1.

Brazil, according to FIFA’s most recent report, boasts the most active market in the international transfer business with over 5,000 overseas transfers between January 2011 and June 2014.
