MANAMA: The United Arab Emirates has been awarded hosting rights to the 2019 Asian Cup.

The Asian Football Confederation confirmed the award after the Emirates saw off competition from Iran. The 2015 finals were held early this year in Australia.

The decision was taken in Manama, Bahrain, during a meeting of the AFC executive committee chaired by AFC president Shaikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa. The UAE hosted the FIFA World Youth Cup in 2013.

This is the latest major award to the Gulf states ahead of Qatar’s likely hosting of the 2021 Club World Cup and certain staging of the World Cup finals a year later.
