ROME: Serie A president Maurizio Beretta has confirmed that the Italian league is considering playing the first game of the season in 10 cities across the world writes KEIR RADNEDGE.

This is the idea previously considered and rejected by the English Premier League on the grounds that a match played in a strange environment could have a decisive effect on important outcomes of the season.

Beretta made his comment after the league’s general assembly

He said: “The concept of playing some official games abroad is very complex, and the Premier League has been studying it for several years now.

“We’re starting from the assumption that there is an important potential in terms of promoting and endorsing our League internationally. There are many options that can be explored. Today we started discussing some of the ideas that can be useful to promote Italian football abroad.”

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis, in a radio interview, talked of playing in 10 cities such as London, New York, Paris, Jakarta, Shanghai and Beijing.

The league regularly plays the Supercup abroad, most recently last December in Doha, Qatar.
