MADRID: Javier Hernandez – Chicharito, the Little Pea – wrote his own remarkable personal page of Champions League history when he scored the single goal with which holders Real Madrid defeated dogged neighbours Atletico in the quarter-finals.

Chicharito, the Mexican who faded out of Manchester United after being substituted during last autumn’s League Cup defeat by the minnows of MK Dons, played in the second leg in the Estadio Bernabeu only because of injury to Karim Benzema.

But with six minutes remaining after 174 goalless minutes in the derby tie he found space to slide home from close range a short cross from Cristiano Ronaldo who had just completed a rapid-fire exchange of passes with James Rodriguez.

Real deserved it, after dominating possession throughout the two ties.

In the remaining quarter-final Juventus held out for a goalless draw against Monaco in Monte Carlo to reach the semi-finals – like Real Madrid – by 1-0 on aggregate.
