LONDON: Manchester United have agreed a £25m deal to sign forward Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven.

Depay became one of the most sought-after players in Europe following an excellent season with the Dutch champions.

Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool were said to be interested in the Holland forward, but PSV and United confirmed on Thursday that the 21-year-old had agreed to move to Old Trafford.

United tweeted: “#mufc has reached an agreement with PSV Eindhoven & Memphis Depay for the player’s transfer, subject to a medical. Pending the successful completion of the medical, the deal will go through once the transfer window opens in June.”

The Dutch club also confirmed a deal had been struck for the player. They said in a statement on their website: “PSV and Manchester United have reached an agreement for the transfer of Memphis to the English club.”

Depay is this season’s top scorer in the Eredivisie with 21 goals. He was a regular for Holland under Louis van Gaal, who left his post with the national side to become United manager last summer.

PSV wished their star man all the best for the future.

“We are very proud of this upcoming transfer, which came in a huge momentum,” PSV’s sporting director Marcel Brands told the Dutch club’s official website.

“Memphis has gone through all the teams of the PSV youth academy and has played an important part in the national title this year. He’s a wonderful exponent of our training and will make a nice transition to a magnificent club in a beautiful competition.

“We obviously lose a fantastic player, which is of great value to the team. But PSV grants him this wonderful step.”
