LONDON: Cristiano Ronaldo missed a chance to extend his lead in the ESM Golden Shoe for Europe’s league top scorer when he missed a penalty against Valencia at the weekend.

Madrid had to recover from 2-0 down at home in the Estadio Bernabeu to claim a 2-2 draw with goals, instead, from Pepe and Isco.

Madridistas will hope Ronaldo recovers his aim for Wednesday’s Champions League return against Juventus in the semi-final second leg, also in the Bernabeu.

If the shutdown of Spanish league football, ordered by the federation in a TV rights row, goes ahead then Ronaldo and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi will remain frozen on their current 42 and 40 goals respectively.

The prospects of their being caught are effectively non-existent. Third-placed Sergio Aguero’s hat-trick for Manchester City against Queens Park Rangers on Sunday lifted him on to ‘only’ 25 goals.

Only goals in domestic regular season league competition count for the Golden Shoe.

Players’ goals totals are multiplied by a 1-2-3 ranking of the countries according to the UEFA Ranking of last July 1. That means the goals from numbers one (Spain) to five (Portugal) are doubled, goals from places six  (France) to 22 (Croatia) are multiplied by 1.5.

Goals in league tournament playoffs do not count.
