MADRID: Camp Nou stood in tribute to Xavi and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo snatched his eighth hat-trick of the season as the Spanish league wrapped up.

Barcelona captain Xavi Hernandez was substituted to a standing ovation as his final Spanish league game ended in a 2-2 home draw for the new champions against Deportivo de La Coruna. Earlier Lionel Messi scored both their goals.

Runners-up Real Madrid thrashed Getafe 7-3 on what was expected to be coach Carlo Ancelotti’s last match in charge. Ronaldo’s treble meant he was the league’s leading marksman with a personal competition best of 48 goals and 61 in all competitions – one more than his tally in 2011-12.

Javier Hernandez, James Rodriguez, Jese and Marcelo scored the other goals while old Norwegian Martin Odegaard became Madrid’s youngest league player at 16 years 157 days when he replaced Ronaldo.

In Barcelona Xavi’s team-mates wore special shirts to honour the 35-year-old midfielder who is heading to Qatar to join Al Sadd after 24 years with Barcelona.

His final bow at the Nou Camp is expected to come in the cup final against Bilbao next weekend while his last appearance for the club should be Champions League Final against Juventus in Berlin on June 6.

Xavi said: “I am the happiest man in the world today and for the 17 seasons I have been here.

“As the coach [Luis Enrique] has said this hasn’t finished. We want two more titles and we want to be here with you all again in Barcelona on June 7.”
