LONDON: Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo has been confirmed formally as the winner of the ESM Golden Boot as Europe’s leading league marksman.

The Portugal captain ended the Spanish season with 48 league goals, five clear of Lionel Messi, his only top-scoring contender. They were among four players from La Liga to finish term in the top 10.

Ronaldo thus won for the second successive season and the fourth time in all.

Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero was third with his 26 goals in the Premier League.

Only goals in domestic regular season league competition count for the Golden Shoe.

Players’ goals totals are multiplied by a 1-2-3 ranking of the countries according to the UEFA Ranking of last July 1. That means the goals from numbers one (Spain) to five (Portugal) are doubled, goals from places six  (France) to 22 (Croatia) are multiplied by 1.5.

Goals in league tournament playoffs do not count.
