OTTAWA: England reached the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Cup at the expense of Norway thanks to a stunning long-range strike from Lucy Bronze in Ottawa.
Bronze fired into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area to book a last-eight tie with hosts Canada.
Steph Houghton’s header from a corner had earlier cancelled out Solveig Gulbrandsen’s flicked opener.
Norway dominated the first half, but after England improved, Bronze gave them a first World Cup knockout win.
Now, they have the opportunity to better the quarter-final defeats suffered in each of their three previous World Cups when they meet Canada in Vancouver on Sunday.
The United States beat Colombia 2-0 in the day’s other second round tie.
