LONDON: Real Madrid and Manchester City have booked their places in the last 16 of the Champions League.

A goal from Nacho Fernandez saw Real Madrid beat Paris Saint Germain 1-0 at the Estadio Bernabeu. Nacho had only been on the field for three minutes when he struck the winner.

A Toni Kroos shot 10 minutes before half-time hit Thiago Silva and the ball looped high into the air towards the full-back, who had continued his run forward. With keeper Kevin Trapp out of position on the byline, Nacho slotted the ball into the net first time from a tight angle for what was only his second career goal.

Old Madrid favourite Angel Di Maria came close to equalising with a minute left but his free-kick clipped the crossbar.

In the other Group A game Shakhtar Donetsk were 4-0 winners over Malmo thanks to goals from Oleksandr Gladkyy, Darijo Srna, Eduardo Da Silva and Alex Teixeira. Malmo also had Kari Arnason sent off in the closing minutes.

In Group D Manchester City also made it through with two games to spare thanks to a commanding 3-1 win at Sevilla. They raced into a 2-0 lead with goals from Raheem Sterling and Fernandinho inside 11 minutes at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

Benoit Tremoulinas pulled one back for last year’s Europa League winners but Wilfried Bony put City back in control before the break.

Heart surgery

Stephan Lichtsteiner earned Juventus a 1-1 draw at Borussia Monchengladbach just a month after undergoing heart surgery.

The Swiss defender, making his first appearance since having the procedure to cure breathing difficulties, smashed in a superb equaliser before half-time.

Fabian Johnson had fired the German side ahead while Juventus had to play most of the second half with 10 men after Anderson Hernanes was sent off.

In Group B Wayne Rooney ended Manchester United‘s 404-minute goal drought by the scoring the winner against CSKA Moscow.

Eleven minutes from time Michael Carrick floated a pass over the back four, Jesse Lingard squared and under-fire skipper Rooney headed in his first Champions League goal since September 2013. The goal was his 237th for United, lifting him level with the club career tally of old hero Denis Law.

Victory over PSV, who beat Wolfsburg 2-0 thanks to goals from Jurgen Locadia and Luuk de Jong, in three weeks will put United into the knockout stages.

Benfica moved to the top of Group C with nine points from four matches after goals from Oliveira Jonas and Anderson Luisao sank Galatasary 2-1. Lukas Podolski had cancelled out Jonas’ opener but Luisao hit the winner in the 67th minute.

In the same group Atletico Madrid were held 0-0 at Astana.
