ASUNCION: The new president of discredited South American confederation CONMEBOL has ordered a high-speed internal audit of the financial records of the organisation writes KEIR RADNEDGE.

CONMEBOL has been mired in corruption concerns ever since past presidents Nicolas Leoz, Eugenio Figueredo and Juan Angel Napout were all indicted by the United States Department of Justice in its FIFAGate investigation.

Paraguayan Alejandro Dominguez, who was unanimously elected as new president on Tuesday, had launched an internal audit into alleged cases of corruption uncovered in the body, and those who are being sought by the US authorities.

Dominguez insisted that transparency was a fundamental principle of his mandate. The fact that he had been voted in by all 10 national football federations was “a big sign of confidence.”

He had decided to run for the presidency in in response to “a crisis”, raised by the arrest last December of Napout.
