FRANKFURT: Germany’s Bundesliga was the best-supported league in Europe last season in terms of match average according to latest figures from the DFL.

A total of 12,980,815 fans attended matches in the 18-club league for a season average of 42,421 fans per game, significantly due to the immense support of Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

Dortmund averaged 81,178 (99.88pc capacity) fans per match, with Bayern drawing 75,018 (100pc capacity).

England’s 20-club Premier League recorded a total of 13,851,829 fans for a match average of 36,452. Manchester United averaged 75,286 followed by Arsenal (59,944) and Manchester City (54,041).

The new German season opens with the Supercup on August 14 between Dortmund and Bayern at an lready sold-out Sigal Iduna Park.
