SYDNEY: Australian Olympic Committee president John Coates is being challenged for his role by hockey gold medallist Danni Roche.

Coates is also a vice-president of the International Olympic Committee and a declared opponent of the momentum building for it to award both 2024 and 2028 Games later this year although he has been appointed to a panel to consider the possibility.

Roche has taken leave of absence from her ASC position while she campaigns.

She is a member of the board of the Australian Sports Commission which has been critical of the AOC over Australia’s results at the Rio 2016 Olympics last year and preparation strategy for Tokyo in 2020.
