LONDON: Bas Dost is the surprise character among the leaders in pursuit of the ESM Golden Shoe which recognises the European leagues’ leading marksman every year.

Dost, 27, is leading the way for Sporting Clube in the Portuguese league after battling his way up the career ladder from FC Emmen to Heracles Almelo, Heerenveen and Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.

He joined Sporting last summer and found an explosive goalscoring vein though it will not lift his club to the Portuguese league title: they beat Nacional 2-0 at the weekend but sit 10 points behind leaders Benfica. Dost scored both goals but remained second in the Golden Shoe rankings because Lionel Messi struck twice himself at the weekend for Barcelona.

At least Dost is now on his own in second slot after sharing the placing last week with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Borussia Dortmund and Andrea Belotti of Torino.

This season’s race appears to be seeing the eclipse of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Real Madrid superstar, four times a winner of the Golden Shoe, is in joint 13th place with 19 goals – but nothing that a characteristic hat-trick could not put right.

Players’ goals totals are multiplied by a 1-2-3 ranking of the countries according to the UEFA Ranking of last July 1. That means the goals from numbers one (Spain) to five (Portugal) are doubled, goals from places six  (France) to 22 (Denmark) are multiplied by 1.5.

As in previous years the Golden Shoe does not consider goals in play-off competitions.
