LONDON: Lionel Messi’s two goals in Barcelona’s weekend win over Real Sociedad have edged him back into sole lead of the ESM Golden Shoe.

Messi totals 29 league goals so far this term, one more now than Bas Dost of Sporting Clube from Lisbon. The Argentinian’s hunger for goals was encouraging for Barcelona ahead of their bid to overturn a three-goal deficit in the UEFA Champions League against Juventus tomorrow.

Dost is bidding to become the first Dutchman to win the annual award for European football’s leading league marksman since Roy Makaay who scored 29 goals for Deportivo de La Coruna in in 2002-03.

Players’ goals totals are multiplied by a 1-2-3 ranking of the countries according to the UEFA Ranking of last July 1. That means the goals from numbers one (Spain) to five (Portugal) are doubled, goals from places six  (France) to 22 (Denmark) are multiplied by 1.5.

As in previous years the Golden Shoe does not consider goals in play-off competitions.
