LONDON: Lionel Messi’s perfectly-timed 500th goal at the weekend – Barcelona’s last-minute LaLiga winner against Real Madrid – has lifted him further clear in the race for the ESM Golden Shoe.

The 29-year-old Argentina closed in on his fourth Golden Shoe in seven years by scoring twice to move three goals clear of Sporting Clube’s Dutch striker Bas Dost.

Messi had gone into Sunday’s clasico at the Estadio Bernabeu on 498 goals after his double in the previous weekend’s win over Real Sociedad.

He drew a blank against Juventus in the Champions League in midweek, but he reached another landmark figure in a career littered with records when he scored twice in Madrid to send Barcelona top of the table after a 3-2 victory.

Ivan Rakitic’s brilliant strike fired Barca in front on 73 minutes, but Madrid, who had Sergio Ramos sent off for a wild lunge on Messi, looked to have claimed a point when substitute James Rodriguez equalised with five minutes to go.

Players’ goals totals are multiplied by a 1-2-3 ranking of the countries according to the UEFA Ranking of last July 1. That means the goals from numbers one (Spain) to five (Portugal) are doubled, goals from places six  (France) to 22 (Denmark) are multiplied by 1.5.

As in previous years the Golden Shoe does not consider goals in play-off competitions.
