LONDON: Harry Kane capitalised on the English holiday football party to race up into second place behind Edinson Cavani in the rankings for the ESM Golden Shoe.

Kane scored a hat-trick last Tuesday in Tottenham’s 5-2 victory over Southampton in the Premier League in the Boxing Day programme while the rest of Europe was taking a break.

This lifted him to 18 goals, one fewer than Cavani. Another Premier star, Mo Salah of Liverpool, is joint third with 17 goals.

Paris Saint-Germain’s Uruguayan has benefited this season from a change in the Golden Shoe computation: France is now among the top five nations according to UEFA’s July rankings. This means his goals benefit from a multiple of 2.0 rather than the 1.5 of last season.

Portugal slipped out of the top five meaning the value of goals in the local league for players from Benfica, Sporting and Porto etc has been downgraded to 1.5. Goals in the countries ranked on down from 23 stand at face value.

As in previous years the Golden Shoe does not consider goals in play-off competitions.
