LONDON: Tottenham Hotspur’s new 61,000-seat stadium will host an NFL game for the first time when the Seattle Seahawks play the Oakland Raiders on October 14.
Tottenham are due to move back from Wembley to their new home at the start of the next Premier League season and the gridiron game will be played on the stadium’s artificial surface, which sits beneath the retractable grass pitch. The club have a 10-year deal with the NFL to stage two games a season.
Chairman Daniel Levy said at the International Series launch: “We hope there is a franchise in London and we want this stadium to be its base.”
Later in October Wembley will host Philadelphia Eagles against Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans v LA Chargers on October 21 and 28, though the order of the fixtures has yet to be decided.
The NFL started playing games in London in 2007 with a vision of one day basing a franchise in the city and even, eventually, the Super Bowl.
