LONDON: Jose Mourinho has signed a contract extension keeping him at Manchester United until 2020, with the option for a further year.

The 54-year-old replaced Louis van Gaal as United’s boss in 2016 and last season he won both the EFL Cup and Europa League as well as the Community Shield.

If he sees the contract through it will be longest single spell Mourinho has spent at any club.

On the club’s official website, he said: “We have set very high standards – winning three trophies in one season – but those are the standards I expect my teams to aim for.

“We are creating the conditions for a brilliant and successful future for Manchester United.”

Mourinho also confirmed new signing Alexis Sanchez will be part of the squad for the FA Cup fourth-round tie away to Yeovil.

Sanchez, 29, completed his transfer from Arsenal on Monday in a straight swap deal that saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan move in the opposite direction.

Mourinho said of Sanchez: “In the Premier League he has shown already the quality he has, we got one of the best attacking players in the world.

“I think he’s very important for us because we want to have the best possible players.”
