MADRID: Spanish prosecutor have confirmed they are seeking a five-year jail sentence and a €4m fine for former world and European champion Xabi Alonso.

The one-time Real Sociedad, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfielder has been accused of tax fraud of around €2m between 2010 and 2012.

He is the latest in an ever-lengthening list of La Liga stars to face tax authority action over the use of offshore companies and image rights.

Prosecutors are demandning similar sentences for Alonso’s financial advisor Ivan Zaldua Azcuenaga and the administrator of consultancy shell company, Ignasi Maestre Casanova.
