NYON: Germany, clear favourite to win host rights to the 2024 European Championship finals, has formally submitted its bid book writes KEIR RADNEDGE.

The DFB has not played host to  a major football event since the 2006 World Cup and is likely to face opposition for Euro 2024 only from outsider Turkey.

DFB president Reinhard Grindel said: “We are submitting an excellent bid concept for a perfectly organised tournament, which offers a great opportunity for UEFA to further develop European football.”

The DFB was cleared to make the bid official after receiving government clearance on financial and security guarantees. The executive committee of European governing  body UEFA is set to announce the winner on September 27.

The 2020 finals will be scattered across Europe in a generally unpopular continental format dreamed-up by now-banned UEFA president Michel Platini.

Germany’s 2006 World Cup was  sell-out success but its legacy has been tarnished with an aftermath involving questions over financial irregularities and the FIFA voting confusion.

UEFA has said that Turkey, which had initially considered bidding for 2020, is expected to submit its bid book later this week.
