LONDON: Lionel Messi  can now be confirmed as having won the ESM European Golden Shoe standings for the continent’s leading league marksman for a record fifth time writes KEIR RADNEDGE.

Messi finished Barcelona’s Spanish league title-winning campaign with 34 goals, two clear of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (32 goals) and four ahead of Tottenham’s Harry Kane.

Serie A contenders Mauro Icardi (Internazionale) and Ciro Immobile finished joint fourth on 29 goals along with Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich).

Benfica’s Jonas also scored 34 goals but Portugal’s status ranks below that of Spain in regulations based on the UEFA ranking of competition value. This means his goals benefit from a multiple of 1.5 rather than 2.0.Goals in the countries ranked on down from 23 stand at face value.

As in previous years the Golden Shoe did not consider goals in play-off competitions.
