SOCHI: Peru went down fighting on their first appearance at the World Cup finals for 36 years, defeating Australia 2-0 on the concluding day of action in Group C in Sochi.

Paolo Guerrero, their veteran captain who had obtained a stay of judgment from the Swiss Federal Court over his doping ban, was the hero on what will certainly by his last appearance in the finals at the age of 34.

His run and cross created the opening, 18th-minute goal for Andre Carillo and he scored the second himself five minutes into the second half. Peru and their fans, who had brought so much happy entertainment to these finals, could at least take pride in the manner of their departure.

Peru finished third in Group C with Australia’s disappointing Socceroos bottom of the table. Tom Rogic threatened occasionally to spark them into life but they lackedĀ  guile and penetration.
