MADRID: Luis Enrique has been appointed new manager of the Spanish national team with the federation not wasting any time turning the page after the World Cup fiasco.

The former Barcelona coach has thus ended a year-long sabbatical during which he had been linked with a number of club jobs including those in the English Premier League with Arsenal and Chelsea.

Luis Enrique, former Real Madrid and Barcelona midfielder, takes over from Fernado Hierro who stepped in as short-term manager of Spain after RFEF president Luis Rubiales sacked Julen Lopetegui two days before the start of the World Cup.

Lopetegui was dismissed after announcing he had been agreed to take over from Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid after the World Cup.
