Season ticket holders in the dark as Spurs prepare for more Wembley games
LONDON: Tottenham Hotspur, leaving paid-up season ticket-holders in the drk about recompense, have conceded that more matches will be played at Wembley while delivery of New White Hart Lane remains uncertain.
Spurs played their home matches at Wembley – the home of the England national team – last season while a new venue was built. The London club had already agreed to face Fulham at Wembley in their first Premier League home game of the season.
The arena was due to be ready to host their home fixture against Liverpool on September 15 but this has now been rescheduled to take place at Wembley.
The Premier League side’s game with Cardiff City has also been moved, while the venue for the club’s clash with last season’s champions Manchester City on 28th October has yet to be confirmed.
A National Football League (NFL) fixture between the Seattle Seahawks and the Oakland Raiders, scheduled to be played at the new 62,000-seater stadium on 14th October, will also now move to Wembley.
A club statement said: ‘Recent testing and commissioning has now shown issues with the critical safety systems.
‘We are reviewing the situation and planned timetable to rectify and re-test, after which we shall be in a better position to outline a revised timetable.
‘The delays created by these difficulties mean that we can no longer hold the necessary test events on 27th August and 1st September. These will need to be rescheduled to take place ahead of any first official match at the new stadium in order to achieve the safety licence.’
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy added: “We know this will be disappointing for all our season tickets holders, premium members and our fans worldwide.
“At the start of the project we asked for your support during what we knew would be a complex and challenging build and now we ask for your continued patience and forbearance.”
Tottenham won their first game of the season, beating Newcastle 2-1. They became the first club in Premier League history not to make a permanent player signing in the designated summer transfer window.
