JOHANNESBURG: COSAFA, the southern African regional football association, has moved to try to fill the senior international gaps left by two local scandals.

The Council of Southern Africa Football Associations decided in Johannesburg to support SAFA president Danny Jordaan to contest the FIFA Council seat left open by the resignation of Ghana FA president Kwesi Nyantakyi.

The latter is under FIFA ethics investigation over allegations of bribery and corruption.

The post is to be contested only by candidates from English-speaking countries on the continent and will be voted at the African confederation’s extraordinary assembly in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt on September 30.

COSAFA has also nominated its president, Phillip Chiyangwa, to replace Zambia’s Kalusha Bwalya on the CAF executive committee. Bwalya was banned from football for two years by FIFA’s ethics committee. He has announced an intention to appeal.
