NYON: Lionel Messi delivered a masterclass at Wembley as Barcelona defeated Tottenham 4-2 in the Champions League on a night whose eight games brought 26 goals.

Messi scored twice and hit the posts twice and was at the heart of the Spanish champions’ outstanding display on a stage where they had twice won the competition. The route to both his goals was prepared by superb selfless dummies from Luis Suarez.

Tottenham battled back bravely in the second half after conceding two goals in the first 28 minutes. The first was struck by Philippe Coutinho and the second volleyed home magisterially by Ivan Rakitic. Harry Kane and Eric Lamela pulled Spurs back to 1-2 and then 2-3 but, in the end, they were outclassed and already risk elimination.

The other match in Group B saw Internazionale recover from a goal down to win 2-1 away to PSV Eindhoven.

Elsewhere in Europe Neymar scored a hat-trick for Paris Saint-Germain as they crushed Red Star Belgrade 6-1.
