CAIRO: Kalusha Bwalya, former star forward then president of the Zambia FA, has been restored on the executive committee of the African confederation.
Bwalya was banned from football for two years by the ethics committee of world federation FIFA last April. He was punished for accepting illicit cash gifts from Mohamed Bin Hammam, Qatar’s former football supremo.
Bin Hammam was president of the Asian Football Confederation and a member of the governing FIFA executive committee when he gave the Zambian $50,000 in 2009 and $30,000 in his ultimately vain bid to oust Sepp Blatter at the head of the world game.
Later Bin Hammam was banned for life for misuse of AFC funds after having previously quit the 2011 presidential race after vote-buying allegations.
In January the FIFA appeal committee cut Bwalya’s ban to the time he had already served and cut the fine reduced from 100, 000 Swiss francs to 10, 000.
Bwalya, a former African Footballer of the Year, is now once again registered by CAF as a member of its executive committee.
