LONDON: Manchester City have confirmed a new kit deal with Puma after City Football Group announced a global long-term partnership with the German sportswear brand.

Starting in July this year, Puma will replace Nike as the exclusive kit supplier for the Premier League club‘s men’s, women’s and youth teams.

The deal was first reported back in November 2017, when British tabloid the Daily Mail suggested the contract would be worth as much as £50m per year.

The agreement is actually worth a whopping £650m over 10 years, making it the second most valuable kit contract in the Premier League behind City’s local rivals Manchester United, who have a £750m deal with Adidas.

The £65m per year figure marks a significant upgrade on the club’s current arrangement with Nike, which agreed a six-year partnership with City in 2013 worth a total £72m.

The deal also includes City’s sister clubs in Australia (Melbourne City FC), Spain (Girona), Uruguay (Club Atlético Torque) and China (Sichuan Jiuniu FC).

City chief executive Ferran Soriano said: “This announcement marks the start of an exciting new chapter for City Football Group. Our relationship with Puma, covering five City Football Group clubs across four continents, will reset the model for sports partnerships on a truly global scale whilst being locally relevant and authentic for fans around the world.

“Puma share our vision for challenging expectations, and we are looking forward to what we believe will be a ground-breaking partnership.”

The agreement will essentially see City replace fellow Premier League side Arsenal as Puma’s most high-profile sponsorship deal in English soccer, after the North Londoners confirmed in October that they will wear Adidas kits from the start of next season.

Puma already has deals with a number of City’s first team stars, including Vincent Kompany, David Silva and Sergio Agüero, along with women’s team players Caroline Weir, Pauline Bremer and Nikita Parris.

Bjørn Gulden, Puma’s chief executive, said: “Puma’s partnership with City Football Group is the largest deal that we have ever done – both in scope and ambition. We are very excited to partner with City Football Group, whose success, ambition and drive for innovation has seen them setting new standards, on and off the field.

“We look forward to building the most innovative partnership in football by redefining the sports partnership model both on and off the pitch. We want to maximise on-field performance as well as football culture, in areas such as music, gaming and fashion to connect and inspire the fanbase of each team.”

City remain second in the Premier League – one point behind Liverpool – after their 1-0 win at home to West Ham United on Wednesday. They travel to play Bournemouth in their next fixture on Saturday.
