MADRID: Andreu Subies has quit as vice-president of the Spanish football federation after media reports that he faces charges of false accounting over a new house and restaurant for his wife in the Catalan town of Cambrils.

Subies announced the decision after urgent talks with FEF president Luis Rubiales, who had previously defended him on the presumption of innocence and had linked the case to Operacion Soule which took down former supremo Angel Maria Villar.

The trigger for the decision was a police report that the president of the Catalan federation had diverted a donation of “almost half a million euros” from the RFEF to rebuild its headquarters.

The investigation discovered that the former vice president used false invoices to camouflage the diversion of funds between 2013 and 2014.
