WARSAW:  Erling Haaland – son of former Nottingham Forest, Leeds and Manchester City midfielder Alf-Inge Haaland – scored a tournament record nine goals as Norway thrashed Honduras 12-0 in the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland.

Haaland opened his account after only seven minutes opener against the central Americans, who ended the match with nine men, and netted the final goal in the last minute.

After scoring his seventh, Haaland Jr was already the most prolific ace in Under-20s World Cup history. He then added two more for good measure to complete his triple hat-trick.

The Red Bull Salzburg striker, 18, was born in Leeds, where his father was playing at the time.

Victory saw Norway finish third in their group, with Honduras bottom.

The last matches in Groups E and F will bring the curtain down on the first round of the tournament today.

Mali will look to seal their qualification when they take on already-qualified France as a victory will take them through as Group E winners.

In action at the same time, Panama will be aiming to make history twice over. Victory over Saudi Arabia would be their first in the competition and would also give them a chance of advancing to the last 16 as one of the best third-placed teams.

The Saudis themselves need to win to have any chance of going through.

In the evening, the spotlight falls on Group F, where an exciting finale is in store, with three teams still in contention for top spot. Argentina are the current occupiers and will need to thwart Korea Republic’s attacking threat if they are to stay there. In the other game in the section, Portugal will hope to secure a place in the next round against a South Africa side that is still without a point.
