After retiring he entered club management and was a member of the coaching staff of the Argentina team who won the Olympic Games football gold medal in Beijing in 2008.

Brown made his league debut in 1975 and captained Estudiantes to victory in the 1982 Metropolitan championship and the 1983 National tournament, being also the team captain.

He moved to Colombia with Atletico Nacional between 1983 and 1984, returned home with Boca Juniors and Deportivo Espanol and moved to Europe with Brest in France and Murica in Spain.

Brown wound down his career back in Argentina with Racing in 1989-90.

He made 36 appearances for Argentina including all seven matches at the World Cup in Mexico when he stepped in for sick Daniel Passarella. Brown’s only goal for his country was their first in the 3-2 victory over West Germany in the Estadio Azteca. Later it was revealed that he had played much of the game with a dislocated shoulder.

Brown had a low-key club coaching career with Los Andes, San Lorenzo, Nuevo Chicago, Blooming of Bolivia, several lower league clubs and Ferro Carril Oeste.

He owed his name to having been a direct descendant of James Brown, a farmer who emigrated to Argentina from Greenock in Scotland in 1825.
