PARIS: French football witnessed a new VAR controversy at the weekend with top international referee Clement Turpin at the centre of chaos in the Ligue 1 derby between Brest and Rennes.

After 64 minutes the game was interrupted for nearly 10 minutes after the referee awarded an opening Rennes goal by new Brazilian signing Rapinha..

Brest players mobbed Turpin in protest that goalkeeper Gautier Larsonner had been pushed by Jordan Siebatcheut. They even reportedly threatened to walk off the pitch before the referee eventually gave in, consulted the pitchside screen and disallowed the goal.

Now it was the turn of Rennes to complain, this time without success. The game ended 0-0.
Brest coach Olivier Dall’Oglio said: “We could have avoided all that if Mr Turpin had come to see the screen right away.”

Turpin is one of the most experienced French referees with more than a decade in Ligue 1 plus major Champions League and World Cup ties.
