LONDON: Manchester United are carrying out a feasibility study into the trialling of rail seats at Old Trafford as they look to bring safe standing to their home stadium.

New legislation in England means clubs can install the rail seating, which locks metallic seats into a set position, allowing for a flow-lane along the row.

Fellow Premier League sides Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur have installed the special seating in their stadiums, and United are speaking to both about the process.

United have subsequently told fans they will update them when they have more information concerning the project, with any progress hinging on ensuring safety standards are met.

The news has been welcomed by fans, with the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust saying: ‘We have fought long and hard for safe standing for many years.

‘We believe it will likely benefit atmosphere but also enhance spectator safety in areas where fans already persistently stand.

‘As a supporters’ group, naturally supporter safety is our number one priority, so we hope that this added safety measure is put in place sooner rather than later.

‘Every game that passes without rail seats in place to prevent fans at Old Trafford getting injured falling over the existing conventional seats is an opportunity missed to make the stadium a safer place.’

United return to old Trafford on 25th September for their Carabao Cup tie against third-tier Rochdale, following a league defeat away to West Ham at the weekend which saw them drop to eighth in the table.
