LONDON:   Manchester City slipped eight points behind Liverpool after losing sensationally at home by 2-0 to Wolves.  Their second league beating was only their fourth at home under Pep Guardiola.

Two breakaway goals in the last 10 minutes by former Spanish youth international Adama Traore delivered only Wolves‘ second win of the season.

Earlier City‘s David Silva hit the bar with a free kick but they badly missed the creativity of injured Kevin de Bruyne. For all their money, injuries have exposed a lack of depth and balance in midfield and defence.

Guardiola said: “It was not our best day. We started well, we wanted to be patient with our game because we know how well Wolves defend. We let them run away twice, got a little nervous and our process to create chances was not good. It was a bad day.

“Wolves are a physical team, a strong team ad we knew how good they are. We know their qualities and we knew how they scored the goals. We were not organised and we lost balls in positions we should not lose them.”

United sunk

Matt Longstaff, 19, marked his Premier League debut by driving home Newcastle‘s 25metre winning goal against Manchester United.

This was the first time Newcastle boss Steve Bruce had ever beaten United, his old club, in hs 21 years as a manager. Defeat raised the pressure on United and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. They are without a league win since September 14 and restart after the international break against Liverpool.

Tammy Abraham celebrated his England call-up for the Euro 2020 qualifiers with Chelsea‘s first goal in a 4-1 win at Southampton.

Abraham, with eight goals, thus became joint top scorer in the league along with Sergio Aguero. The assist was provided by Callum Hudson-Odoi, making his first league start of the season.

This was a third successive league defeat by Ralph Hasenhuttl‘s team who are one point above the relegation zone.

Arsenal rose to third place despite an unconvincing performance in a 1-0 win over Bournemouth. David Luiz headed the early goal and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hit a post in the closing minutes.
