SYDNEY:  Australia and New Zealand have submitted a joint bid to host the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The deadline for submitting the relevant documents to FIFA, world soccer’s global governing body, is Friday but the two federations have already completed their application, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

The joint bid wants to see the final of the quadrennial international women’s tournament played in Sydney, at the newly renovated 75,000 capacity ANZ Stadium in the Olympic Park.

The FFA had recently abandoned plans to submit a standalone bid for the competition as it believes, according to the Herald, that the best chance to beat the bids from Japan and Colombia was to join forces with its neighbour New Zealand. FIFA’s decision to expand the tournament from 24 to 32 teams was apparently not a factor.

Back in September, the Queensland government, which is on a drive to become a major global sports destination having recently approved plans for a run at hosting the 2032 Summer Olympics, pledged AUS$11 million (US$7.5 million) towards the bid. In return, Queensland wants to host at least two matches, including one knockout match, at the Suncorp Stadium, home of A-League team Brisbane Roar.

After Bolivia pulled out of the race after the confirmed expansion , followed by South Africa, the five other nations are still bidding to host the 2023 Women’s World Cup are Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Japan and South Korea.

A full evaluation of the plans will take place in January and February 2020, with a vote taking place in May.
